Meet Sonya Ross
Our founder, Sonya Ross, is a veteran political journalist. During a career spanning more than three decades, Sonya covered state politics, civil rights, urban affairs, even the White House. She covered President George W. Bush during the 9/11 terrorist attacks and helped direct coverage of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and the worldwide campaign against terrorism. She also led a specialty race & ethnicity reporting team for The Associated Press that ushered in a new approach to this coverage. All of this work landed Sonya in the Society of Professional Journalists’ Hall of Fame in 2018. In short, Sonya knows what she’s talking about. Black Women Unmuted is your chance to hear directly from her and other sister journalists who know their stuff!

Meet Nicki Mayo
Nicki Mayo is Editor-at-large for Black Women Unmuted. This multimedia journalist has devoted her 20 year professional career to amplifying the voices of Black people while covering general assignment, politics, true crime investigations, arts and entertainment. Nicki has worked for the Associated Press, The Crisis Magazine, TV One’s “News One Now,” Philadelphia Tribune‘s PhillyTrib.com, E.W. Scripps’ The List Show and more. Nicki reports on local government elections and policy issues that have a ripple effect nationwide. This multimedia maven is the leadership behind Black Women Unmuted’s video reports, social media engagement and campaigns (ex: Black HERstory Month and “In her own Words” Women’s HERstory Month tributes). In her spare time, Nicki devotes her audio, video and social media production skills to supporting advocacy for Black women’s reproductive health, financial literacy, housing equity and more. She is also a volunteer with the National Association of Black Journalists and has served as president of the Baltimore chapter, becoming the first woman to hold the office in Charm City. Black Women Unmuted is the perfect platform for Nicki’s keen eye for what’s timely and important to Black Americans and women.
