“We Are Not Playing Around”

Just thought we’d pop in here with an update right quick on Vice President Kamala Harris, now the presumptive Democratic nominee running against Republican nominee and former President Donald Trump.
Hours before current President Joe Biden’s Oval Office address about his plans for the remainder of his term, Vice President Harris gave a speech before members of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., who are holding their national convention in Indianapolis this week. She touted several Biden administration accomplishments that she had emphasized in speeches earlier this month at the Essence Festival in New Orleans and the national convention of her own sisterhood, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., in Dallas.
They included: Capping the cost of insulin at $35. Passing a Child Tax Credit aimed at reducing child poverty. Forgiving student loan debt for more than 5 million people. Barring medical debt from being factored into credit scores. Taking steps to reduce maternal mortality.
She characterized Project 2025, the Heritage Foundation’s conservative vision for reshaping U.S. government under a second Trump term, “a plan to return America to a dark past” by cutting Medicare, eliminating the federal Department of Education, ending community-based federal programs that benefit children and families.
“These extremists want to take us back. But we are not going back,” Harris said. “Ours is a fight for the future, and ours is a fight for freedom.”
That fight, she said, revolves around voting rights, and reproductive freedom. She assured the Zetas that, “when I am president of the United States” and Congress passes legislation restoring the right to abortion, she would sign it into law.
“We are not playing around,” Harris said to laughter and applause.
“In this moment, our nation, as it always has, is counting on you to energize, to organize, and to mobilize.”
Harris was accompanied from Washington aboard Air Force Two by Rep. Sydney Kamlager-Dove, D-Calif., a member of Zeta Phi Beta. The vice president also acknowledged another prominent Zeta in the audience, activist Opal Lee, known affectionately as the grandmother of Juneteenth.
Grant praised Harris as “strong, brilliant and compassionate,” adding “her love for this country is unmatched and her faith guides her actions.”
